- 1 whole fresh apple
- 2 teaspoons of whole cloves
- 1 orange, thinly sliced
- 2 quarts of apple cider
- 1/2 cup of light brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon of allspice
- Pinch grated nutmeg
- 1 cup of dark rum or calvados (optional)
- Cinnamon sticks for garnish
Stud the apple with the cloves.
In a medium pot, combine the studded apple with the remaining ingredients except the rum or calvados. Slowly bring the mixture to a simmer over low heat. Simmer for 10 minutes.
Remove from the heat and (if you are using them) add the rum or calvados. Discard the clove-studded apple.
Ladle the cider into glass or ceramic mugs and garnish each with a cinnamon stuck.
